With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation since 1999, the Advancing Global Health Policies Through Information project promotes greater awareness and use of population and health information among policymakers, program managers, educators, librarians, and journalists. BRIDGE
With funding from USAID from 2003 to 2008, the BRIDGE (BRinging Information to Decisionmakers for Global Effectiveness) project supports policy reform efforts by providing influential audiences in developing countries and the international development community with up-to-date information on key population and health topics.

Media Programs
Through global, regional, and country-level programs, we work with journalists in developing countries to build their competence, understanding, and commitment to provide effective and high profile coverage of health and population. Our work with journalists includes sponsoring seminars on these issues and providing support for reporters to attend and cover regional and international conferences.

Mentoring Program for Population Fellows
With support from the Compton Foundation, PRB is conducting a mentoring program for the Foundation’s Population Fellows masters- and doctoral-level scholars from developing countries who are studying issues related to population and reproductive.

Middle East and North Africa Policy Communications Program
The goal of PRB’s Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Policy Communications program is to respond to the region’s needs for timely and objective information and analysis on population, socioeconomic, and reproductive health issues. The program was launched in 2001, with the support of the Ford Foundation in Cairo.

Population, Health, and Environment Program
The goal of the Population, Health, and Environment (PHE) Program is to improve people’s lives around the world by increasing awareness of critical PHE linkages and by promoting a better understanding of their causes, consequences, and the ways that they can be addressed. In recent years, the program has received funding from the Compton Foundation, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Summit Foundation, the Turner Foundation, and the U.S. Agency for International Development (through MEASURE Communication and BRIDGE).

Population and Reproductive Health Country Profiles Database and Publication
In collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), we have produced a database and companion publication of national and subnational indicators for reproductive health. The database has 173 indicators for 165 countries. Both the database and publication, which can be accessed online, contain country-specific population policy reports.

Saving Newborn Lives
With support from Save the Children, PRB is writing, producing, and disseminating a series of policy briefs on neonatal health and survival in collaboration with the Saving Newborn Lives (SNL) Initiative.

Support for Analysis and Research in Africa
The Support for Analysis and Research in Africa (SARA I and II) projects, which span 1992 to 2004, are designed to help the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Africa, Office for Sustainable Development achieve its goals. PRB is a member of the SARA consortium, which is operated by the Academy for Educational Development along with Tulane University, JHPIEGO, and Morehouse School of Medicine.

TASC II
PRB is a partner on one of USAID’s TASC II Indefinite Quantity Contract (IQC) teams. The contract started in September 2003 and will run for five years. Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Emerging Markets, Ltd. leads the team called healthCONNECT, as one unit offering complimentary and diverse experience and expertise to provide USAID with a “one-stop shop.”

MEASURE Communication
The USAID-funded MEASURE Communication project (from October 1997 to March 2004) promoted the dissemination and use of information on population, health, and environment in support of improved program planning and policy decisions. The project used multiple communication channels and formats, some direct (booklets and websites) and some indirect (institutional capacity building and media outreach), to bring information to decisionmakers in a timely and accessible manner. The final report highlighting results and lessons learned will be available in the spring of 2004.

Pakistan: Technical Assistance for Policy Communications
In January 2004, PRB staff provided technical support to the Population Council Pakistan staff to develop a policy communications strategy for their 2001-2001 survey, “Adolescents and Youth in Pakistan.” Together, we developed a plan for policy-oriented print materials (a wall chart and three policy briefs), and identified several key opportunities to meet with and present the information to key audiences.

Cambodia: Technical Assistance for Strategic Planning Training
In October and November 2003, PRB staff, with support from University Research Corporation, designed the curriculum for training of provincial, operational district, and health facility staff in the New Planning Cycle. The five-day workshop curriculum covered preparation of action plans at each level, including conducting a health situation analysis, target setting, costing and budgeting, and monitoring and evaluation.

Vietnam: Policy Communications Training
In June 2002, PRB conducted a 10-day policy communications workshop in collaboration with the Hanoi School of Public Health (HSPH). The project, funded by the Ford Foundation, gave participants skills in communicating the policy implications and recommendations of their research to policymakers in easily understandable formats so that their research could influence policies and programs.

Vietnam: Dissemination of Population and Reproductive Health Information
In 1999-2000, with funding from a private foundation, PRB and the National Committee for Population and Family Planning (NCPFP) worked to increase dissemination of population and reproductive health information throughout the country. Four publications were produced in Vietnamese and English and distributed throughout the country to provincial committees (PCPFP’s), government agencies, NGOs, and researchers.
