The percentage of children living in two-parent families declined from 76 percent in 1980 to 68 percent in 1999, while the percentage of kids living with one parent increased from 20 percent to 27 percent over the same period.
Among children living with one parent, most were with their mothers. In 1999, 23 percent lived in mother-only families, while only 4 percent lived in father-only families (5 percent lived with neither parent).
Over half of all black children (51 percent) lived in mother-only families, compared with 27 percent of Hispanic children, 16 percent of non-Hispanic white children, and 15 percent of Asian children.
