Vaccination Coverage on the Rise
Vaccinations provide protection against potentially serious diseases and help protect communities by reducing the spread of infectious agents. National vaccination coverage levels among children 19 to 35 months of age have improved over the past several years. In 1991, about 69 percent of children had received three or more doses of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccine, 53 percent had received three or more doses of polio vaccine, and 82 percent had received one or more doses of measles vaccine (MCV). In 1998, estimated national coverage levels exceeded 95 percent for three or more doses of DTP vaccine, over 90 percent for three or more doses of poliovirus vaccine, and 92 percent for one or more doses of measles vaccine.
