U.S. population: the basics

There are approximately 273 million people living in the United States: 70 million children, 168 million working-age adults (18-64), and 35 million persons over age 65. The U.S. population is 71.9 percent white, 12.1 percent black, 11.5 percent Hispanic, 3.7 percent Asian and Pacific Islander, and 0.7 percent American Indian.

Since 1990, about 23 million people have been added to the U.S. population. Hispanics are the fastest growing racial/ethnic group, adding almost 9 million persons to the population since 1990.
