West? Median Household Income by Region
In 1998, median household income was highest in the West ($40,983),
slightly lower in the Northeast ($40,634) and Midwest ($40,609), and
lowest in the South ($35,797). Since 1970, there has been a persistent
income gap between the South and the other regions. However, the
Census Bureaus measure does not account for regional differences in
the cost of living or housing affordability. Adjusting for consumer
buying power would result in smaller differences among regions, since
costs of living are generally lower in the South. For example, in
1998, the median price of an existing single-family home in Atlanta,
Georgia was $115,400; in San Francisco, it was $321,700. |
