Twenty-Somethings Move the Most
Many of the events that cause a person to move happen during early adulthood. Between 1998 and 1999, close to a third of all people ages 20 to 29 ("Generation X" or "Gen X") moved to a different residence. These young people are going through a turbulent time right now, moving out of their parents' homes, attending college, and starting first jobs.
When baby boomers were in their 20s and 30s, they tended to follow a pattern of marriage, career, and family building. Their offspring will be less predictable. Gen Xers will live longer periods of their lives as housemates and will put off marriage much longer than their parents did. These newly mobile individuals and households will be the primary movers over the next decade and will shape new patterns of population growth and distribution.
